The skimmer box is a contraption that many pond owners take for granted. However, it is an essential item that you don’t want to be without, and below is an overview of what it does, why it’s important, and how to buy it.
Skimmer boxes are used for three main functions, which are to eliminate debris, bring clean water back to the pond and provide aeration so plants and fish get the oxygen they need. These boxes are comprised of three subcomponents, which are the mesh net, filter and water pump. The mesh net is used to capture big objects as water enters the box. This includes twigs, leaves and related materials.
The filter is large, with high density and thickness. It can be found behind the mesh net and is designed to capture and hold smaller debris that the net can’t, such as pollen, algae and dirt. The water pump is completely submersible and is best thought of as a power source which drives the process of filtration. It does this by pulling substantial amounts of pond water via the net after which the liquid is filtered and returned in the form of clean water. It can also function with waterfalls in the same capacity.
Aside from keeping water clean and clear, skimmer boxes also discourage algae growth and the onset of stagnant water. Its aeration contributions are also a big deal, because without oxygen, all life in the pond will cease to exist.
While all skimmer boxes function in the same basic manner, they come in different sizes and styles, so it is important to choose the right one for your pond. Before you go out shopping for one, you must first know the total amount of gallons that your pond contains. This information can be determined through measuring the greatest points of length, depth and width. Once you have this info, you multiply everything together. Then you buy a skimmer box which is rated for the same amount of gallons that your pond contains.
Like other pond products, skimmer boxes differ in their quality and durability, and you should always buy the best you can afford. Make sure the one you get has a strong lid, trap net with a steel frame (as these are the best for catching debris) and if possible, a Matala filter mat. High quality skimmer boxes will always have thick walls with lots of space for bigger pumps, and a brush panel which is heavy duty since this allows for more refined mechanical filtration. As a general rule of thumb, the more GPH (gallons per hour) that a skimmer box can process, the greater the price. The smallest models usually start out at between 2,000 and 4,000 GPH while top of the line models can handle between 7,000 and 15,000 GPH.
